NGO - WOFAK, Women Fighting AIDS

Overview
Women Fighting AIDS in Kenya (WOFAK) is an NGO founded in August 1993 by a group of women, the majority of whom are HIV positive. WOFAK targets women, who are particularly vulnerable to infection, in the following three regions: Homa Bay (South Nyanza), Kayole in the Eastlands of Nairobi, and Nairobi City Center. Broad objectives include enabling women and young girls to:

  • Take appropriate steps to protect themselves and others from infection or
repeated exposure to infection (for those who have sero-converted).

  • Seek early treatment for opportunistic infections for themselves and their sick
    children.

  • Make appropriate decisions about reproductive roles after HIV/AIDS infection.
  • Access good nutrition and engage in other activities that help prolong and
improve the quality of their lives.

In short, the goals of the organisation are to empower women to live with AIDS in a positive manner, as well as to prevent infection, by giving women the for a and voice to articulate their needs.
