Nafula Project
SPAN is excited to watch volunteers Kathryn Nelson and Ben Swalis accomplish their many goals on-site in Western Kenya. Making headway on the non-profit Nafula Foundation that focuses on assisting orphans and needing families, which Kathryn helped begin on a past SPAN trip, they both are joining efforts to accomplish goals including

  • Distributing mosquito nets (200).
  • Testing children for HIV/AIDS (75).
  • Community education about sanitation and diseases.
  • Bringing clean water to the Chebukwa area.
  • Conducting further research about the area - assessing needs
  • Further information about their work, set between May and August of this year, can be found on their website: www.nafulafoundation.org

Any questions about how you can get involved, or donate towards their efforts can be directed to SPAN at info@studentprojectafricanetwork.org

    Baobab Branch Educational Programmes
Amos Otieno, a SPAN Regional Director, is continuing the work on education focused NGO Baobab Branch in Nakuru, Kenya. Working to develop a private - candidate program, focusing on providing educational services to those who cannot afford conventional high school graduation, is one of the big projects underway. To learn more, read the recent blog of Cameron Dunkin, SPAN Executive Board Member who helped co-found Baobab Branch from Jan - May of this year.

    Morokoshi Nursery School
Steve Muriithi, founder of Morokoshi Nursery School in a rural community of the Kenyan Rift Valley, is using the solar electric infrastructure installed by SPAN Directors Kai Staats and Cameron Dunkin and SPAN volunteer Rie Haga, initiating an evening library program where students from the entire area to have a place to read and work at night. Recently, he has installed a rain barrel outside the classroom so there is a more steady holding of water for the school children. Morokoshi teachers are moving forward with newly developed teaching strategies, and are taking time now to address the Post Traumatic Stress found in many of the children who experienced first-hand the traumas of the political clashes early this year.
